How to get to know your ideal customer without paying for market research

Five simple, free ways to understand what your customer needs, the words they use and why they buy from you (or don't).

Almost every marketing problem starts in the same place: talking to "everyone". When you don't know exactly who your customer is, your ads, your website and your posts say generic things nobody feels are about them. The good news: you don't need expensive market research to start.

1. Talk to 5 real customers

Call or meet five recent customers for 15 minutes. Ask:

  • What problem did you have when you looked for us?
  • What other options did you consider?
  • What almost stopped you from buying?
  • How would you explain what we do to a friend?

Write down their exact words. Those phrases are gold for your ads and your website.

2. Read reviews, yours and your competitors'

5-star and 1-star reviews tell you what people value and what disappoints them. Look for patterns: do "fast", "on time" or "they explained everything" keep coming up? That's what you should highlight.

3. See what people ask on Google

Type your service into Google and look at the suggestions and the "People also ask" box. Those are real questions from potential customers and perfect topics for your content.

4. Review your messages and calls

The questions you get most on WhatsApp, Instagram or the phone show what isn't clear in your offer. If ten people ask for the price, maybe you should show it.

5. Write a one-page profile

With all of the above, summarize on one page:

  1. Who they are (their situation, not just their age).
  2. What problem they want to solve.
  3. What worries them before buying.
  4. The words they use.
  5. Where they look for information.

Good marketing isn't about you: it repeats, more clearly, what your customer is already thinking.
